In the logistics terminal, load fluctuations and peaks in transfer fees were driving up costs. Forklifts and yard equipment needed fast, scalable charging.

Logirin Oy's terminal handles large volumes of goods every day and the terminal has several electric forklifts, lifts and other heavy equipment in constant use.

The company's production director Seppälä describes the situation before Renewe's solution: "Our energy costs had risen worryingly, and especially transmission peaks increased the bills significantly. When several trucks arrived at the same time and the trucks were charging, the electricity consumption peaks were huge."

Additionally, the terminal needed a faster and more efficient charging solution for its fleet. Queues at old charging stations were causing delays and reducing productivity.

Comprehensive planning and customized solution

Logirin contacted Renewe in search of a solution for its energy management. Renewe's experts conducted a thorough assessment of the terminal's energy consumption, load profiles, and future needs.

“The Renewe team was very professional. They took the time to understand our business needs and challenges. We were not offered a ready-made package, but a truly customized solution,” Seppänen says.

Renewe designed and delivered a comprehensive energy package:

Solar power system: A 220 kWp solar panel system was installed on the terminal's extensive roof. Solar panels was oriented in an east-west direction, which ensures more consistent energy production throughout the day compared to the traditional south orientation.

Energy storage: 0.6 MWh / 0.3 MW battery system smooths out consumption peaks, batteries act as backup power for critical loads and enable electricity to be purchased at the most affordable times.

Charging infrastructure: Both AC and DC power were installed in the terminal.charging stations (80-150 kW) for electric vehicles. The system intelligently prioritizes charging and dynamically manages loads.

Energy Management System (EMS): Intelligent control systems automatically optimize the use of solar energy, battery and charging according to the spot electricity price and terminal needs.

Smooth implementation and deployment

The project was implemented in phases to avoid disrupting the terminal's normal operations, and the installation took approximately three weeks.

“Renewe’s project manager kept us informed throughout the project. Communication was excellent, and the schedule was met. Our staff received comprehensive training on how to use the new charging stations,” Seppänen says.

The system was implemented gradually, and Renewe's experts ensured that everything was working optimally before the project was completed.

Significant savings and improved operational reliability

The effects of the new energy solution were immediately visible.

"Our peak power decreased by an estimated 25-35 percent, which is directly reflected in transmission fees. This is a huge saving on an annual basis," Seppänen rejoices.

The solar panel system provides a significant portion of the terminal's energy needs during the daytime, when operations are at their busiest. The battery system stores excess energy for later use or sells it back to the grid during the most profitable times.

“The energy management system is a real game changer. It automatically buys electricity during the cheapest hours and uses the battery during the more expensive ones. We don't have to do anything ourselves – the system takes care of everything,” Virtanen explains.

Improved charging infrastructure has brought more flexibility. With DC fast charging, forklifts and lifts can be charged significantly faster, reducing waiting times and improving availability.

“There are no more queues at charging stations, and the fleet is more ready for use. This has significantly improved our productivity.”

The environmental impact is also significant. The terminal's CO₂ emissions have been reduced thanks to its own solar energy production and smart energy management.

Investing in the future

The owners are very satisfied with the solution and see it as a strategic investment.

“Our energy costs have decreased by about 35 percent, and the payback period is estimated to be 5-7 years. After this, we will save significantly every year,” Seppänen calculates.

“The system is also scalable. As we expand our operations, we can easily add capacity to both solar panels, energy storage and charging.”

Seppälä warmly recommends Renewe to other logistics operators.

“Renewe understands the needs of the industry. They don't just sell equipment, they act as a partner who helps find the best solution for your business needs. I highly recommend them!”
