The Kotiläinen family built their dream home in Tuusula in 2024. The 290-square-meter detached house is located on a natural plot in the middle of a forest. Energy efficiency and ecology were important values for the couple when planning their new home.
“The home is large and we wanted a heating solution that was environmentally friendly, cost-effective and reliable.” “We also saw that summers were getting warmer, so the need for cooling was obvious. We wanted one comprehensive solution without many separate systems.”
The couple was also concerned about rising energy costs and fluctuations in electricity prices, and they also wanted to take care of their own energy footprint.
“Energy costs were a key concern for us. In a large house, heating costs can be significant, and we wanted to avoid any unpleasant surprises in the future,” says Kotilainen.
An energy survey was conducted for the property, based on which they were offered a comprehensive energy solution.
"The experts clearly presented the different options to us. They made precise calculations of energy consumption and savings potential, which made decision-making easier. We were also not pressured in any direction, but were allowed to make our choice in peace."
The locals ended up choosing an inverter-controlled geothermal heat pump The system was supplemented by an 11 kWp solar power system, which produces energy especially during the summer months, when the need for cooling is greatest.
"The combination solution was perfect for us. We get a consistent and pleasant indoor temperature from the geothermal energy all year round, and in the summer the cooling keeps the home pleasantly cool. The solar panels produce electricity precisely when cooling consumes the most energy."
"We were satisfied with the work throughout the project. All permits and official contacts were handled smoothly. The installation was on schedule and the workers were professional."
For the residents, the installation of the energy solution was part of the house construction project. A geothermal well was drilled at the edge of the plot and solar panels were installed on the roof of the house.
“It was important to us that solar panels are unobtrusive and integrate well into the appearance of the house. The implemented system is aesthetically pleasing and fits into the architecture of the house.”
The residents moved into their house in early 2024, and now, after the first full year, they have been able to see the functionality of the energy solution in practice.
"Our energy costs have been significantly lower than expected. In the coldest months of winter, the geothermal energy worked very efficiently - and cooling in the summer practically costs nothing."
Kotilaisen are particularly satisfied with the system's ease of use and smart functions.
"We manage the entire system through a mobile app. We can see energy production and consumption in real time and adjust temperatures remotely. The system also automatically optimizes energy use based on the price of electricity."
"In the summer of 2024, we experienced a heat wave, when the outside temperature was above 30 degrees for a long time. The cooling kept our home pleasantly cool, and the best part was that almost all the energy for the cooling came from our own solar panels."
Local residents also see their energy solutions as an investment in the value of the property and as a green solution.
“We have been really satisfied, everything went really smoothly. We were able to trust the employees and we didn't have to know anything technical about the systems ourselves.”
