Modern energy solutions turned a traditional production facility into a cost-effective energy producer

The Wiksten farm had high energy costs and a high dependence on oil. The 600-square-meter barn and 220-square-meter residential building require a lot of energy – heating, cooling and electricity for daily operations.

The farm owner describes the situation before the energy solution was renewed: “Energy costs had been rising year after year. Oil heating was expensive, and electricity bills were high, especially because of the additional heating and machines. We wanted to find a more sustainable and affordable solution.”

In addition, the Wiksten family wanted to reduce the farm's carbon footprint and move towards renewable energy.

Comprehensive energy planning for farm needs

The Wiksten family contacted Renewe, which also specializes in energy solutions for farms. The experts conducted a thorough assessment of the farm's energy needs and consumption profile.

“Renewe’s professionals really understood the specific needs of agriculture. They took into account both equipment consumption and barn heating, which are critical for us,” Wiksten says.

Renewe designed and delivered a comprehensive energy package:

Solar power system: 48 kWp solar power plant were installed on the roofs of both the barn and the residential building. The panels produce plenty of electricity during the day, just when the farm is at its busiest.

Energy storage: 40 kWh batteries stores excess energy produced by solar panels for later use. This allows solar energy to be utilized even in the evening and at night, when the solar panels are not producing electricity.

Exhaust air heat pump: Installed on site exhaust air heat pump, which utilizes waste heat, the heat pump collects this and transfers it to the building's heating and hot water production.

Smart control: The energy management system automatically optimizes energy use. It directs the milk cooler to operate when the solar panels produce the most electricity or when the electricity price is the cheapest.

Professional implementation and commissioning

The installation was carried out in two stages during June and September so as not to disrupt the farm's normal operations or production.

“The installation went very well. The workers were knowledgeable and careful. They took into account the special circumstances and ensured that the installation did not disrupt the daily operations,” Wiksten recalls.

The Wiksten family received comprehensive training on the new systems, and they can now monitor energy production and consumption in real time via a mobile app.

Significant savings and improved energy self-sufficiency

The impact of the new energy solution was significant. After the first full year, the results exceeded expectations.

“Our energy self-sufficiency rate increased to almost 40 percent. This is much more than we dared to hope for.”

The solar panel system produces up to 110 percent of the facility's needs in the summer, and the excess energy is sold to the grid. The system also produces a significant portion of the energy needed in the winter.

Annual energy costs were reduced by approximately 12,000 euros. The need for oil heating dropped to almost zero, and electricity bills were significantly reduced.

“The exhaust air heat pump has been a real discovery. It utilizes heat that would otherwise be wasted. The heating costs of the residential building have dropped drastically,” Wiksten explains.

Smart control has proven to be very useful. The system automatically optimizes the use of the equipment so that it operates mainly on solar energy during the day.

A sustainable investment in the future

The Wiksten family is very satisfied with the solution, both financially and environmentally.

"The investment will pay for itself in approximately 6-7 years. After that, we will save tens of thousands of euros per year," Wiksten calculates.

The farm's carbon footprint has also been significantly reduced, which is important to the family.

“We want to leave this farm in better condition for future generations. Renewable energy is an important part of that. We are proud that we can produce milk in an environmentally friendly way.”

Wiksten highly recommends Renewe to other farmers.

“Renewe understands the needs and challenges of agriculture. They don’t offer ready-made packages, but truly customized solutions. I recommend every farmer to at least ask for a quote – the savings can be significant!”
