The EU's ambitious Repower project is bringing significant changes to energy solutions for buildings. The background is the EU's goal of energy self-sufficiency, which is being implemented in practice with the update of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). What does this mean for property owners and builders?
Schedule and requirements
The new directive introduces clear time limits for the deployment of solar energy:
New construction
- 2026: Finland's legislation to be updated
- 2029: Solar panels mandatory for new residential buildings
- Planning and connection processes must be smooth
Public buildings
- 2026: All new public buildings
- 2030: All public buildings over 250m²
Private non-residential buildings
- 2028: Buildings over 500m² in connection with renovations
- This applies especially to roof and other major renovations.
Why act now?
Even though the deadlines seem far away, there are several reasons to be a pioneer:
Profitability at its peak
- The price/performance ratio of solar panels is excellent
- High electricity prices accelerate payback period
- Available subsidies improve the profitability of the investment
Avoid traffic jams
- As deadlines approach, there will be a shortage of installers
- Component availability and delivery times are getting longer
- Prices are likely to rise as demand increases
Exceptions to the rule
The directive takes into account situations where the installation of solar panels does not make sense:
- Significant shadings
- Construction constraints
- Protective aspects
However, these exceptions only apply to a small part of the building stock –
estimated to be less than 10 percent in Finland.
How to proceed?
- Survey
o Determine the solar potential of your property
o Assess current and future energy needs
o Take into account upcoming renovations and improvements
- Design
o Optimal system sizing
o Integration possibilities with other energy solutions
o Permit and connection issues
- Achievement
o Professional installation
o Deployment and optimization
