An exhaust air heat pump (EIHP) uses the indoor air removed from a building as a heat source. It recovers the heat that would normally escape with ventilation and transfers it back to the domestic hot water and heating system. The system combines ventilation, heating and domestic hot water production into one unit.

The efficiency of an exhaust air heat pump, or SCOP value, typically varies on both sides of 3, meaning that the device produces approximately three times more heat energy than it consumes electricity. The efficiency depends, among other things, on the indoor air temperature, the device model and the use to which the heat is directed. The best efficiency is achieved in steady, continuous use.

The installation of an exhaust air heat pump includes dismantling or integrating the old ventilation equipment, installing the new equipment in the technical space, and connecting the ventilation ducts, water, and electricity. The installation usually takes 1–2 days and requires precise site-specific planning, especially in renovation projects.
