Geothermal energy works by utilizing renewable thermal energy stored in the ground. The heat collected through an energy well or ground loop is transferred to a heat pump, which uses a compressor to raise the temperature for water-circulated heating and hot water production. The system works all year round, even in freezing temperatures.
The installation of a geothermal heat pump includes drilling a heat well or installing a horizontal circuit, installing the heat pump device itself in the technical space, as well as connecting the water circuit and electrical work. The installation usually takes 2–4 working days and requires both interior and exterior work. The work is carried out as a turnkey contract by specialized installers.
Ground source heat pumps are very popular in Finland, as the ground temperature remains constant throughout the year. Finnish conditions are particularly well suited to borehole solutions, which offer high efficiency even in winter. Their use is also supported by a long service life and a clear reduction in energy costs.
The total cost of a geothermal heating system for a single-family home is usually 14,000–24,000 euros, depending on the size of the property, energy needs and the depth of the well to be drilled. The investment typically pays for itself in saved heating costs within 6–8 years. In commercial properties, the prices are significantly higher, but the payback period is even shorter.
